Sideway New York Review: Originality over Innovation
At its core Sideway: New York is about as standard a platformer as there is. That said: if it aint broke, dont fix it. While theres always room for innovation, when it comes to 2D platforming the genre has more or less been perfected. That's the reason that New Super Mario Bros Wii is essentially the same game as Super Mario Bros 3 despite its release over two decades later. Instead of attempting to reinvent the wheel, Playbrains has created a unique visual device that separates their game from the crowd, without veering too far from the proven mechanics that have become the genre standard. If you havent noticed from the screenshots already, Sideway: New York is a 2D game played in 3D. While I typically take that to mean the 2.5 D that you see in games like Shadow Complex or Paper Mario , thats not exactly what you have here.
