I'm curious because my brother gave me his old paint kit from the early 90s and one of the tubes of paint, a titanium white Winsor and Newton water mixable oil paint, contains a warning: Contains Lead! and a detailed description about prolonged exposure

Q: How should an old oil painting smell?

I have just bought an oil painting that has been behind a glass frame for a long time. The frame looks fairly modern, but the painting smells sweet and old. It is dated 1883 and is on a good quality paper.
