Shells, sonatas star at The Main Gallery in Redwood City
"Sea Shells and Sonatas" opens Wednesday at The Main Gallery in Redwood City. The show features ceramic works by Susan Wolf and photographs by Arup Biswas.
A book of seashells that Wolf received as a gift inspired her current shell creations. Most of her hand-built ceramic pieces are made of porcelain, and most of them have considerable underglazing. Some are left raw, while others have a clear overglaze.
Biswas, who was born in the foothills of the Himalayas in India, is inspired by the beauty of nature. He says, too, that music exerts a strong influence in all his photographic works. He feels that music and photography evoke similar emotional responses.
Trees are a favorite subject for Biswas. Rather than capturing the grand landscape panorama, he is more apt to resonate with blooming dogwoods in springtime or brightly hued aspens in the fall. "I start experiencing the color, form and shape throughout my whole body," he says. "I respond with my camera."
