Artist's mural in Va. Beach honors America's warriors
VIRGINIA BEACH
Turn the corner at 16th Street, and you'll see a Black Hawk helicopter hovering overhead.
It's part of a mural, two stories high, showing modern soldiers carrying a wounded comrade from battle. Nearby, shadowy figures represent soldiers from America's wars - the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, World War I and World War II. The Vietnam War is included in the World War II figure because the uniforms were similar.
"We talked about how neat it would be to showcase America's past," said Jason Redman, who conceived the mural with the artist. That's why the shadows are there, he said, watching "today's warriors preserving everything they fought for."
The artist is Chesapeake local Sam Welty. He and Redman dedicated the mural this weekend during a fundraiser for Wounded Wear, a nonprofit that Redman founded.
